How to Sharpen Craft Punches

How to Sharpen Craft Punches

Craft punches get dull after a while, but that doesn’t mean they need to be replaced. Just grab a piece of aluminum foil; fold it over a few times; and take several punches out of it. The foil will sharpen the edges of the punch, so it works like new.

Need to sharpen your craft scissors? This same trick works for them, too.

Treat Yourself to a Free Shopping Spree

Coupons for free products are fun to use – especially when you cash in a bunch at once. That’s why I like to save up all my freebie coupons until I have enough to send myself on a mini shopping spree. Sometimes I’m even able to tie in free events for even more fun.

Check out the latest free shopping spree that my family went on:

  • We hit Toys R Us for a free Lego build. The kids each got a free Lego accessory set to take home
  • Then, we headed over to the mall, where I used two free panty coupons at Victoria’s Secret, and we each used a $15 off $15 coupon at Express. The kids used their’s to buy Christmas presents for each other. On our way out, we stopped by Godiva, where they were giving away free samples of their pumpkin truffles. Yum!
  • Next up … the kids’ Halloween party at Trader Joes, where my kids each scored a free pumpkin, snacks and a few other goodies
  • On our way home, we happened to pass a Trunk or Treat event at a church, so we stopped there, too. The kids got candy, and we all got free chili for lunch. Bonus!
  • And the final stop on our free spree… a Trunk or Treat at my in-laws church. That netted us more candy and free dinner, complete with dessert

All in all it was a great day, and it didn’t cost us a cent.

If you’ve never treated yourself to a free shopping spree, I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to get in a bit of guilt-free shopping, and it can be a real adventure.

Grocery Shopping at Home Depot

Grocery Shopping at Home Depot

Sometimes the best grocery deals aren’t at the grocery store. They may even be somewhere completely off the wall, like Home Depot. Not convinced? Check out this deal that I got recently:

Home Depot ran a zombie game on their Facebook page for the month of October (no longer available); and if you played it long enough, you could earn a total of $30 in coupons to use in their lawn & garden section. That’s a lot of free money, and it could be used on all sorts of things – plants, mulch, flower pots or (if you think like me) groceries. You see, since it was October, they had big boxes of pie pumpkins in the lawn & garden section, and they were just begging to be taken home and pureed. So, I picked out $15 worth of pumpkins, and used the rest of my coupons to buy a tree for the backyard.

We’re currently using the pumpkins as Halloween decorations, but as soon as the holiday passes, those suckers are getting pureed. Pumpkin soup, here I come!

And if you think that’s odd, just wait until I tell you about the time that I grocery shopped at the library. The frugal life – it’s many things, but dull sure isn’t one of them.

Have you ever grocery shopped somewhere odd? I’d love to hear about it.

Cloth Napkins

Cloth Napkins

A few years ago I decided I was done with paper napkins. Done with buying them, and done with using them. I started picking up cloth napkins at yard sales and thrift stores, and soon had more than enough. Here’s what I’ve discovered since making the switch:

  • Cloth napkins are really cheap and easy to come by on the second-hand market
  • It doesn’t make any real difference in the amount of laundry that we’re doing
  • The kids don’t mind folding them, and if they do it while they’re hot, the napkins come out relatively wrinkle-free (ironing = not my thing)
  • We use less napkins. One cloth napkin takes the place of several paper napkins because they’re bigger and more absorbent
  • Cloth napkins are just nicer. They make everyday meals seem special
  • It gives me the perfect excuse to buy lots of vintage linens :)

Do you use cloth napkins in your home? Have you thought about making the switch? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
