I’ve been buying my kids toys at yard sales since they were born, so I’ve developed a system for cleaning everything that we bring home. It works for the germaphobe in me, so it’ll probably work for you, too. Take a look:

Huffstetler family road trips always include stops at thrift stores, estate sales and flea markets. Yesterday I showed you the dishes that I scored at an estate sale we happened upon while in Massachusetts a few weeks back. Today, I thought I’d talk about one of the scheduled stops on our trip: Brimfield Antique Show.

For years I’ve wanted a set of brown transferware dishes, but it’s pricey stuff, so I’ve always just admired it from afar. That all changed a few weeks ago, when we stopped in at an estate sale while on vacation.

Large trash pick up happens on our side of town on the 15th of every month. We drove around last night to see if there was anything good out yet, and we snagged a trunk load of rocks to use in our garden. While on our way to a yard sale Saturday, we passed a curb pile of yard trimmings, which included a bunch of iris bulbs. Not one to pass up free flowers, I had my husband turn around, so I could grab them. I now have about two dozen irises to get in the ground, and they’re in a beautiful pale pink that I didn’t have yet. I don’t understand why dividing flowers has to mean throwing away the extras, but it worked out well for me.
