Chocolate Pudding Mix Recipe

Homemade chocolate pudding is the go-to dessert in my house, when one of us gets a sudden craving for something sweet. It only takes 12 minutes and one pan to make a batch, and it’s something the kids can make themselves. In fact, my 11-year-old is usually the one that makes our pudding.

In the interest of creating fewer kitchen messes, I decided to convert my single-batch pudding recipe into a mix that we could just scoop out as needed. This means the sugar, cocoa and corn starch don’t have to come out every time we want pudding (which really means I don’t have to clean up powdery spills every time we make pudding).

Now, we just scoop one cup of mix into a sauce pan, and we’re off and running. Easy!

Want to add a jar of chocolate pudding mix to your pantry? Here’s my recipe.

Here are some free labels that you can use to label your chocolate pudding mix. They’re designed to print on full-sheet shipping labels. Use Avery 8165, if you have an inkjet, or Avery 5265, if you have a laser printer.

I recommend using smooth-sided jars. The labels don’t go over the raised lettering on mason jars very well. I’ve been using smooth Ball jars that I got from Michael’s. Be sure to print a coupon before you go. Those 40% off coupons are fabulous.

Alright, now that you’ve got your mix, let’s make some chocolate pudding!

Chocolate Pudding

Stove-Top Chocolate Pudding Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup chocolate pudding mix
2 cups milk
2 tsp. vanilla extract

What You Do:

Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan, and stir continuously over medium heat. It’ll take a little while for the dry ingredients to mix into the wet ingredients, just keep stirring, and it’ll all come together. The pudding is done when it thickens and begins to boil. This will take approximately 12 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat, and allow the pudding to cool slightly, before serving. This pudding is good warm or chilled.

  1. Would tapioca starch work instead of corn starch? I am allergic to corn byproducts and many simple things like puddings and cake mixes are unavailable to me. Love your site.

    1. Hey, Wendy. I haven’t tested it, but I’m thinking double the amount of all-purpose flour might be a better bet. Tapioca starch does great with heat, but it doesn’t work as well when dairy products are involved. Might be worth trying a batch with AP flour and a batch with tapioca to see which you’re happiest with. Here’s an article that I wrote about cornstarch substitutes that you might find helpful (it also links to a bunch of other corn substitutes that I’ve written): https://www.thebalance.com/cornstarch-substitute-recipe-4155161

      1. Hi, I saw your other recipe. You mentioned that for the 3.9oz box to use 1cup from your mix recipe.
But if I want to use THIS recipe with powder cornstarch, would it be the same? 1cup of the mix?
        Thanks in advance!

  3. Thank you, Erin! I lost my non-instant pudding mix recipe years ago,and have been hunting for a mix that is not instant pudding and does not use instant dry or non-fat dry milk powder. I will try your chocolate and vanilla mix! Would you happen to have a mix for butterscotch pudding? Thanks so much!
