Good for you for asking the question. It may be difficult to determine which is cheaper, and there are certainly other factors that might make you choose the more expensive option, but we should all be willing to think through our choices every so often.

As I recall, the Tightwad Gazette research indicated that in real money (amount of time worked to pay for something), nearly everything was cheaper than it was 50 years earlier.
