I was required to present my marriage certificate to get my husband's social security. With my mother, no. Once the funeral home submitted my dad's death to SS, hers was automatically changed. Not sure why.

Dutch friend has just started dating so nowhere close to getting married. But her ex is still alive (runs his own business) and it might be that she would get a higher SS from him when he dies. Friend getting married would already be collecting her DH’s SS if it was higher since he died 2 1/2 years...

Wait... My general (possibly entirely wrong) understanding is that if your Dutch friend marries new guy and the marriage doesn't last at least 10 years, social-security wise, she is SOL - she can't collect new hubby's, and she can't collect late hubby's, just her own. Which may be great for her but...
