Florida, YES...I think opening a savings account at a different bank or credit union and doing that is a good idea. Currently I transfer money from my checking to savings (same credit union, accounts are "tied" together) but that makes it too easy to transfer it back and/or fritter it away.

I have savings and checking at the same credit union, but I also have Clubs attached. I have Escrow, vehicle, vacation, inheritance, Mom. Each club has a purpose and I don't borrow from them. I do transfer money back and forth from checking to savings sometimes, but not my Clubs. DH and I always put a memo on any withdrawal from a club so we know what the money was used for.

This might not work for all, but it does for us.
