Healthy Eating in 2016
Re: Healthy Eating in 2016
I think summer is easier. I do like a variety of vegetables and when they are less expensive and fresher I will buy more. Garden was really helpful last year. I have a surplus of garden lettuce right now. Cannot wait for squash and beans.

That sounds good! I was too lazy to plant anything this year other than some herbs. cj

Well, it is diet and exercise time in preparation for my Aug/Sept 10 day trip. Diet changes, cut back on pasta, increase fiber and protein. Exercise will be treadmill. I considered 100 calories, but then decided to do it relative to distance. Most scenic overlooks etc are at least a mile from the road. So a mile on an incline should be a honest goal. I go on days that I don't have dance class. Weight as of July 4 is 138. Goal by late August, maybe 130. That may be a bit ambitious at my age, but setting goals are important.

I agree, setting goals are important! I chart out my weight and exercise times. we both have been trying to do 10,000 steps daily (or 6 days a week). I have gained on vacation but am back on track this morning. As I get older I need to eat less and less to maintain a good weight. so I really try to pump up the volume with fresh and lightly sauteed veggies. one of my favorites is grilled zuchinni. so good and so few calories. do you have any veggies that you like in particular? this year we have also been doing grilled fruit. cj

Blonde, this time of year, very few vegetables do well in the Florida heat and bugs. This is fruit season. Southern fruit like watermelon and papaya are good and reasonably inexpensive. Bananas and pineapples also. Northern fruit shipped down here is usually not very good. Anything cooked just makes the Florida heat hotter, so meals are a "flash" in the pan. Come September, vegetables start appearing. This far south is like the flip side of north.
I love Swiss chard because it has a long season here. I like traditional greens, but they have a shorter season here. So it is a couple of months without many vegetables.

Started my better eating/exercise program on July 4th. I decided to start on a holiday because it would be easy to remember. I reduced my carbohydrates and food quantity. I increased my gym visits. The food quantity reduction is frugal and the gym is free. I am using the free program, myfitnesspal to watch my total daily food intake. However, it is hard to measure what nutrition you need with an exercise program.
I go to the gym for at least an hour every day except dance class days. At the gym, I use the treadmill at 5 incline and 3.1 miles per hour to generate about 400 calories and 3 miles. Recently, I have added the bike for additional calories burn when I feel like it. Yard work is iffy because we are in the rainy season and it rains a lot. And very hot, over 100F heat index every day and most over 110F. I used to go to evening dances, but without a regular partner, I sit too much. $8-$10 to sit for 2 hours. I don't think so. Also, they often have cookies at the dances. I prefer to avoid the temptation.
I'd rather spend that money and learn something....lessons.
Breakfast: protein, fat and maybe carbohydrate. Protein is either beef or egg, fat is beef fat usually. Carbohydrate may be pasta.
Lunch: yogurt or cereal with whole milk. Fruit maybe mid afternoon.
Dinner: meat or fish or eggs with vegetables and oil. Dessert is fruit.
Surprising how fast the calories add up.
