The final challenge will be either Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck or To Kill a Mockingbird for me but can I recommend ANY Jane Austen to anyone who hasn't read any of her books as the book over 150 years old.

Start with Pride and Predjudice, you won't regret it .

I like the random Idea of picking a book with a yellow cover too, how funny ;)

Thank You !!!!
Thanks, Rinty! I hope you and your DH enjoy working on the challenge.

Thanks for the Jane Austen recommendation for the book over 150 years old. I've often thought I should read some of her books, but I never have. I wouldn't have thought about it for the challenge until you said that. Thanks!

As for your two choices between Of Mice and Men or To Kill a Mockingbird, I've read and enjoyed both. However, I'd go with To Kill a Mockingbird all the way. I do love me some Atticus Finch!

Happy reading!

I tried to persuade Floridacatlover to read Jane Austen after we visited Bath together, hope she has tried some ?

Re older books WHATEVER you do , do NOT try and read Moby D I C K. DH was reading the classics and we found it was TORTURE to read. I had loved my kids classic version but the actual full length original was such a chore........... DH was listening to it on audio book muttering " make ............it..............stop "

I've just re read the What Katy Did series and enjoyed all them again. Lots of " older " books are a great read.

Just not any about White Whales..............

Sounds good to me Randa -

Your best friend’s favorite book
A book that is more than 150 years old
A book by an author who shares your first name
The first book in a series
A book with a yellow cover
A book that was published the year you were born
The biography of someone you admire
A book that’s been on your shelf for a long time
A book released in 2019
A book that has been made into a movie you’ve already seen
A book that will help you achieve one of your goals this year
A book you were assigned to read in high school, but didn’t!

BUT - I have a problem with some of the categories - not the categories as such but as they apply to me. 1. My best friend doesn't read, so that is a no go. 3. I just went to Amazon and searched for an author with my first name. Apparently Lynns are not big authors because all I could find were romance novels and what appears to be pornographic novels - so that would be a hard pass on that category. 8. A book on your shelf a long time- every book I have, I have read already. 11. I am retired - I don't have any goals except to do what I want when I want to do it.
12. At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna - I was a kid who minded and I never had a book assigned I didn't finish.

So count me in other than these - maybe I will substitute my own categories for those. I average about 4 books per month, so this will give me some focus. I read a good book last night - it is called The Gown by Jennifer Robson. It is a novel based around the dressmaker's company where Queen Elizabeth's wedding gown was made. It is the story of two (fictional) embroidresses who worked on the dress.

Thanks to Rinty’s suggestion I read the CJ Sansom Matthew Shardlake detective series. Seven books and it took all winter. They are about an attorney who lived in the time of Henry VIII. He solves mysteries. Fascinating and entertaining. Thank you, Rinty!

I hear you on the author's first name challenge! I didn't think I would find anything, but I just googled and found something that will fit the bill. There aren't that many Randas out there so I was surprised to find something, but hey...you just never know until you look!

randamax wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2019 10:31 am I'd mentioned this a few weeks ago, but didn't get much of a response. However, I thought I would go ahead and post it for those who may be interested. I did not create the book challenge - I only saw it and thought it might be fun! I thought maybe those who participate could go ahead and post their results here so we can see/hear about your book choices for the different categories. It's supposed to be a one year challenge (for us slowpokes!), so this is a bit of a late start, but there are many on here who read a great deal and will probably complete the challenge in record time. So without further ado, here's the challenge:

Read…
Your best friend’s favorite book
A book that is more than 150 years old
A book by an author who shares your first name
The first book in a series
A book with a yellow cover
A book that was published the year you were born
The biography of someone you admire
A book that’s been on your shelf for a long time
A book released in 2019
A book that has been made into a movie you’ve already seen
A book that will help you achieve one of your goals this year
A book you were assigned to read in high school, but didn’t!

Good luck everyone!
