One of the Texas refiners refines Heavy crude and is now being forced to buy crude from Canada rather than Venezuela. Oil companies make their money on the spread between what they spend on crude and the sale of the finished product.

Heavy crude is more expensive to refine. Most refineries do not have the ability to refine the heavy crude. Most new oil discoveries today are the heavier crudes.

Natural gas refiners remove all the natural gas liquids that they sell as these for higher prices. Remember most plastics are made of natural gas liquids.

The prices I have noticed going up mostly are meat.

With the flooding in the midwest this year food prices will go up much higher.

There has been a lot of crop loss due to severe storms and flooding.

And a lot of crop loss due to droughts.

Warmer, and colder, temperatures have brought both extended freezes and early springs, causing produce to freeze out, or flower too early, inviting pests that damage the crops. Washington apples are now getting sunburned.

That's all called climate change.

Trucks of food and other goods coming from Mexico are stalled at the border, with drivers waiting 24-48 hours, sitting in their trucks, to get through. Companies are sending two drivers with each truck so they can sleep. Some companies are now flying goods into the US, which costs a lot more to do than trucking.

High tariffs on food and goods coming from China and other countries.

The response of high tariffs on our exports is killing farmers who rely on China buying soybeans, corn, wheat, etc.

I'm trying to hold my food budget in check by paying a lot more attention to food waste. I'm also going to try making my own sourdough bread. It doesn't spike my blood sugar, but It's now hard to get bakery loaves of it in my town. Aldi's sells out, our Kroger's is gone, and Walmart's is doughy.

And every time I buy a $3 loaf, I tell myself "I could make this for .50 cents" LOL

The biggest price increases I see are services.

Dentist - was $170 last fall, now $174 (yes, I go to an expensive dentist but that is why I was surprised by the increase because the price is already high.)

Vet - April 2018 to April 2019
Senior exam - $61 to $64
Rabies shot - $25 to $29.70
Bloodwork - $189 to $205.81
On a positive note, last year when I asked them to trim Pippi’s back nails they charged me $7. They never used to charge. But this year the trimmed both front and back without me asking and didn’t charge.

The cost of services are increasing because the cost of goods are increasing. The vet has to buy supplies and medications, which like food may be stuck at the Mexican border, or now have high tariffs. If your vet sells pet foods, the wholesale price has risen for the vet just as it has for grocers and pet stores.

It is interesting the domino effect of prices on everything. Bad weather and climate, oil production and imports, aggressive tariffs, and shutting border entrances hits everyone in the wallet. Too bad everyone didn't get those wealthy tax breaks to help absorb the increases.

Yes, looking at the items listed from my vet visit, the biggest increase is the rabies shot, up 19% in just one year.

Actually the reason they are buying heavy oil from the tar sands is because the price differential for Canadian is cheaper. They aren't being forced at all. We are forced to sell at a discount because the US sets the price. What they pay us for our heavy oil and what they pay other countries is almost half. This is why Canada is trying to get other countries to buy and why our oil businesses are laying 1000's off.
