All we have ever used is a stock pot for canning. My mom is going to give us one of her old canners though - so that will be nice.

Sorry to be so late but you could make a "raft" using the lids from jars, not the flat ones but the rings. I used cheap plastic zip ties to keep together. It worked. I tried one time without and had catastrophic failure. As in exploded jars, the whole batch. It wasn't pretty.

I have also used my big stockpot for canning, in fact I did so LOTS of times this past canning season. I have used cotton dishcloths, canning lids, canning rings, and a layer of aluminum foil on the bottom of my stock pot.
