The Breeze is Free and Accomplishes a Lot

Post by HappyDaze »

So this morning it was humid - but there was a nice breeze and it rained from time to time. I pretty much keep my windows open May through October regardless of weather and today was no exception.

I always hang my laundry to dry and decided today to hang several items on hangers from the curtain rods in my bedroom. This helped the clothing dry because it was hanging directly in front of the open windows with the breeze blowing. It also achieved making the room very dark and between that and the breeze blowing over the wet laundry, it kept the room considerably cooler - I even let the dogs stay in there because it was cooler than the other rooms.

It's hard to put my point into words - I guess my point is that it makes me happy when something that is FREE - in this case the breeze - can accomplish so much. It's like when rain waters the vegetable garden or sunlight melts the ice off your car - it all warms my miserly heart!

I pulled out my drying racks and have been using them every time I do laundry. When it gets really hot the clothes dry very quickly. Since we are going into the most expensive time of the year as far as electrical usage I also use my air fryer instead of my oven. During the hours of 5 to 8 p on weekdays everything is turned off since it costs over $.29 per kilowatt hour for use. Unfortunately during the hot late afternoons my a/c kicks on even though the thermostat is set at 78.

It is! Our utility company set it that way a few years ago to discourage electricity consumption and avoid power failures. Since it is a community owned utility it's not like anyone profits from this. The problem is the rates coincide with the hottest part of the day so its frustrating to try to cut back. And when we get into the a heat wave the a/c kicks on before noon and runs non-stop for the next 12 hours. When we have had an extremely severe heat wave the a/c sometimes runs 24/7. Fortunately those occasions are rare.

Oh, how I wish we could leave our windows open. With DH's allergies/asthma it's not possible, plus he thinks leaving windows open invites criminals to come right in. I see his point. Memphis has a lot of crime. It's much better out where we live, but it still happens. So I envy you your fresh air and breezes in your home. :-)
