High humidity in winter

Post by Dgflorida »

I know that many of you use your furnace and experience dry winter inside air. But several of you don't use it or use it rarely. With my new windows and insulation, I have not had to turn on the heat yet. But I am seeing water on the window sills from the temperature differential between the outside chilly air and the inside warm air. If you get that on the inside of your windows, is there something more to do than just wipe it off?

Here's a lot of good information. I'd turn the heat on for a while.

I agree with Jodi. Keeping the furnace off won't be much of a money savings if you get mold growing within your walls. Mold abatement is costly.

The problem could also be with the seal around your windows. I know you just got some put in a bit ago, but if they are not installed correctly or if they are older the seal between the panes lets go. Or the seal (caulking around the window frame) gets old and cracked causing an influx of cold air from outside to hit the warm air from the inside. This causes condensation leading to water droplets on the windows.
