Us Brits all pay around 11.7 % of our gross salaries into the NHS..........( our FREE medical care system ) so we never get slaughtered as you do paying for your medical care at point of use.
So you can see, our FREE care isn't exactly FREE but its a system and it works.
Your system is ( to me ) terrifying with the amounts you end up paying. That is def a reason the poor stay very poor.
But the common sense argument re young people ..............even if it makes us sound like sanctimonious dinosaurs...........is TRUE, sadly.
Their version of " basics" is mindless. Those are not basics !!!!
Clem, you can go out and help but its changing peoples mindsets that needs to happen.
one more reson tht the poor stay poor :-(

One couple i know would not add the husband to the family insurance plan because it would cost too much. And who ended up getting ill and almost dead? The husband. Not sure how that all worked out.
I thought it was crazy cuz the wife drove a very expensive SUV.

I know i ticked off on person in our group when she mentioned she was going to the grocery store. I said AGain?
She is there about three times a week. She lives alone. She just likes to be out and about and that costs money.
Her vehicle barely runs but she just keeps going!

I went with her to a bingo parlor a few weeks ago. She was almost desparate to go and did not want to go alone. I had no plans so said sure.
The woman just kept spending and spending. I know for a fact that she is constantly late on her rent. She rents from a friend of mine.
I made my initial "investment" back and didn't spend any more. She was in the hole for at least at a minimum 100 bucks!
I know others like this. Go to the casino an hour or so away. Had to turn in their car cuz they could not afford it.
They want to get ahead via these ways that are only making others rich. Just stay home, and save your pennies!
DH and I don't gamble, but his mother does about $1500 to $2000 a month. She is 89 and in very bad health SIL is talking care of her 24/7 but she still goes to BINGO and has no savings, doesn't want to pay for anything to make SIL's life easier to take care of her.
She wants to be buried and not cremated, but refuses to save for it. sad, just sad.

Hi y'all,
Ditto, ditto, ditto on the gambling. This is also true if you are partaking of cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana on a real regular basis. No lectures from me; but, its something I've noticed over the years. I know people that have complained about never having money to save that consumed 2 to 3 cartons of cigarettes a week and were snockered when they weren't at work. That is expensive.
I've just learned something I wonder if a lot of others didn't know about hospitals. We have some dear friends whose oldest son who is 7 has had to be admitted to 2 different hospitals. Both gave them a list of not for profit entities who will help pay or pay altogether for hospital stays or other hospital services. They both also offered pretty low payment plans for whatever balance is left. I just never knew there were such entities.
I know I don't post often but I do try to keep up. I must say several of you have lately had me laughing out loud and I'm grateful.
I do feel badly for those suffering and usually try to keep them in my prayers.
