Frozen Hot Chocolate

Have an ice cream maker? Then, you have to try my super-simple and oh-so-tasty recipe for frozen hot chocolate. It’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day, and tastes like something that came from an expensive coffee shop.

This is the first of several frozen drink recipes that I’ll be sharing with you in the coming weeks. While developing ice cream recipes this summer, it suddenly occurred to me that an ice cream maker could probably also be used to make frozen drinks, and that led to all sorts of tasty experiments and new recipes that I’m eager to share with you.

This frozen hot cocoa recipe was a big hit with my family. I used my homemade hot cocoa mix, and topped the whole thing off with a big dollop of homemade whipped cream. Yum!

I tested and developed this recipe in my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker. If you’re in the market for an ice cream maker, it’s definitely a good one.

How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate (in an Ice Cream Maker)

This frozen hot chocolate recipe makes three to four servings.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup hot cocoa mix (here’s my recipe)
  • Whipped cream (optional, but very tasty)

If you want to make this recipe dairy-free, just swap your favorite non-dairy milk for the milk that’s called for.

This recipe was developed to fit in a 1-1/2 quart or larger ice cream maker.

What You Do:

Whisk Hot Cocoa Mix and Milk Together

Whisk milk and hot cocoa mix together in a large measuring bowl.

Hot Cocoa in Ice Cream Maker

Pour the hot cocoa mixture into your ice cream maker.

Frozen Hot Cocoa After Churning

Churn, until it reaches the consistency of a slushie.

Then, pour your frozen cocoa into glasses; top with whipped cream; and enjoy!

If you want to get fancy, add a drizzle of this chocolate syrup

Frozen Hot Chocolate (in an Ice Cream Maker)

Use your ice cream maker to make frozen hot chocolates. Only two ingredients required.

  • Yield: 34 frozen hot chocolates 1x

Instructions

Whisk milk and hot cocoa mix together.

Pour into ice cream maker, and churn, until it reaches the consistency of a slushie.

Serve your frozen hot chocolates with whipped cream.

Notes

  • This recipe is sized to fit a 1-1/2 quart, or larger, ice cream maker.
  • For a dairy-free version, just use your favorite dairy-free milk, in place of the milk that’s called for.
  • Nutrition Facts are based on using 2% milk, and do not include whipped cream.
