Save the Ham Bone
Once you finish all your ham leftovers, use the ham bone to make ham broth.
I am familiar with this recipe although I add a boiled egg. You can substitute the ham with leftover roast beef or any kind of lunchmeat. When I was growing up people used bologna for the ham and called it ham salad anyway.
I bet it’s really good with roast beef. I’ll have to try that some time.
Ham salad is one of my favorites, and I make it frequently. So glad to see it here, since ham and beef salad recipes are rarely seen. A pity since a tiny can of ‘Devilled Ham’ costs about $3.00.
My recipe is a bit different, but not much. I add mild onion and dill (rather than sweet) pickle and pulse it with the ham. (I love the new ‘nothing added’ pickles that have just become available). After turning it into a storage bowl, I add the mayonnaise and mustard to taste.
This recipe is really great with leftover lean roast beef. (Considering my average roast beef, it’s about the only thing to do with it…sadly). The salad is great with a bit of black pepper and a hint of horseradish.
Can’t wait to try sweet pickle with the ham salad. I actually have a ham slice baking in the oven for the experiment!
