Eager to load up on apples while they’re in season, so you can make apple butter, applesauce, apple pie and all other manner of apple goodness, but not sure how many apples you need to pick or buy? Here’s how many apples it takes to make a cup, a pound and even a pie.

These apple equivalents and measurements are intended to serve as guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules. Use them to estimate how many apples you need for your recipe. Then, buy a bit more, so you’ll be sure to have plenty of apples.

How to Measure Apples

The size of your apples will determine how many apples you need for your recipe. If you’re using small apples, it’ll take more apples to fill a measurement. If you’re using larger apples, it’ll take fewer. Here’s how apples are measured:

Small = 2-1/4 inches in diameter
Medium = 2-3/4 inches in diameter
Large = 3-3/4 inches in diameter

It’s perfectly fine to use apples that fall outside of these size guidelines. Just know that you’ll need to make some adjustments to the measurements that follow.
