How to Measure Tomatoes

Tomatoes vary widely in terms of size and water weight. If your recipe calls for a certain size tomato, this is what it’s really asking for:

1 cherry tomato = 1/2-2 oz.
1 small tomato = 3-4 oz.
1 medium tomato = 5-6 oz.
1 large tomato = 7 oz +

How Many Tomatoes are in a Pound?

Once you know what size tomatoes you’ll be using in your recipe, you can quickly estimate how many it’ll take to make a pound.

1 pound tomatoes = 2 large globe tomatoes
1 pound tomatoes = 3 medium globe tomatoes
1 pound tomatoes = 4 Roma tomatoes, or other large plum tomato
1 pound tomatoes = 8 small plum tomatoes
1 pound tomatoes = 15-20 cherry or grape tomatoes

Just remember that these are estimates. It never hurts to buy a bit extra, to ensure you’ll have what you need for your recipe.
