How to Get a Free Haircut

Free Haircuts

A few weeks ago, I snagged free haircuts for my whole family at Supercuts, and it’s something anyone could do.

Lots of salon chains have training centers, where they send their new stylists to learn the ropes, and they often offer free or cheap haircuts to the public. It’s something I’d always been curious about, but had never had the opportunity to check out.

Then, I came across a Craigslist post for free haircuts, and discovered that we had a Supercuts Training Studio in our area. Who knew?

The listing said they would be offering free haircuts at their training center later that week; you just had to e-mail to make an appointment. So, I fired off an e-mail, and within about an hour, I had appointments for my family.

We laughed about how sketchy it seemed to book hair appointments through Craigslist, but our appointments were at an actual Supercuts salon, so really it wasn’t sketchy at all.

The instructor at the training studio was nice enough to let us film our visit, so you guys could see what it was all about. Take a look:

The training studio was tucked in a back room of a regular Supercuts salon, and had two chairs. On this particular visit, there was one student stylist, plus the instructor.

I asked lots of questions while I was getting my hair cut, so I could pass the details on to you.

How Supercuts Training Studios Work

Supercuts has training studios all over the country. There’s basically one in each region that they serve. All of their newly-hired stylists have to spend a week there – even if they’ve been cutting hair for years. It gives them a chance to learn how Supercuts does things.

At the end of the week, the studio offers free haircuts to the public, so the students can put their skills to the test.

There was one point where the instructor jumped in and offered some advice on clipper settings, while the stylist was cutting my husband’s hair, but other than that, it was just like any other hair appointment that I’ve been to – Except that we didn’t have to pay on our way out. Sweet!

Our local Supercuts charges $15.75 for a haircut, so that was a $63 savings for us. My youngest daughter would be quick to point out that that’s enough for 63 packs of bacon at Dollar Tree. Clearly, that’s the better use for the money.

Everyone was happy with cuts, so we’ll definitely be doing this again.

How to Get a Free Haircut at a Supercuts Training Studio

If you want to get in on the action, I would recommend doing a web search for Supercuts Training Studio and the name of your city or state. You could probably also call your local salon to ask where the nearest training studio is located.

We made our appointment by responding to a Craigslist ad, but you can also make an appointment by calling or e-mailing the studio directly.

The instructor explained that she travels between studios, so there’s only a class at our studio once a month. She gave me a phone number and e-mail address that we can use to make future appointments. If we leave a message, they’ll give us a call the next time they have a class.

This phone number is different than the one for the salon that the studio is housed in, so it may take a bit of legwork to track down the right number. I did a quick search for training studios earlier today, and it looks like a lot of them have Facebook pages, so that’s definitely an avenue to explore.

More Places to Get a Free Haircut

If you don’t have Supercuts in your area, lots of other salons have similar training centers or schools. Paul Mitchell is one example. They offer deeply-discounted cuts, color, manicures, waxing and more.

And there are plenty of non-salon-affiliated beauty, hair and cosmetic schools that do the same thing. Do a bit of digging, and you should be able to find an option for free or cheap cuts in your area.

Is This Something That You Already Do?

Have you found other ways to get free haircuts? I’d love to hear about your experience.
