Vintage Doors

If you’ve been following our cabin progress, you might recall that I’ve been collecting free doors for a secret project (to be revealed at a later date). We’ve rescued quite a few doors from curb piles, but this project is going to take a lot of doors, so I also asked friends and family to keep an eye out for us. That paid off last week. My sister-in-law called to say her friends had some doors they wanted to get rid of. So, I called them up, and we went over to pick them up. That trip netted three doors. Awesome!

Wrought Iron Gliders Before

And I don’t think I’d mentioned it yet, but my husband’s uncle gave us a wrought iron glider set a couple months ago. He said he was tired of painting it. It was in great shape, but desperately needed a fresh coat of paint. We hauled it up the cabin a while back, but I kept forgetting to bring paint up.

Well, I finally got around to painting it Saturday.

Glider Closeup

Here’s what the set looked like before its makeover.

Closeup of Rust

The paint had gotten flaky and chalky, and the wrought iron had started to rust. It really wasn’t usable in its current state.

Glider Set - After

And here’s what it looked like after a bunch of wire brushing and four cans of spray paint. It looks a little pink-y in the picture, but it’s poppy red in real life. I plan to use this color on most (if not all) of our outdoor furniture at the cabin to unify our collection of cast-offs.

I still need to buy a couple more cans of paint to do a second coat (I always cheap out and buy less spray paint than I need on my first trip to the store). But, I’m really looking forward to having another spot to read and hang out.

Sweet Potatoes

Oh, and while we were up there, we kept passing signs for produce at the end of driveways. We bought a big pile of sweet potatoes at an Amish farm for $9.
Box of Apples

And we picked up a big box of apples from a road-side stand for $10. I plan to make a couple of batches of apple butter this week. I have an idea for a dessert recipe, starring apple butter. If it works out the way I hope, I’ll share it soon.

So, we aren’t making a ton of progress on the cabin at the moment, but we aren’t spending a lot of money on materials, and we’re really enjoying our time up there.

  1. I love the bright red you chose for your outdoor furniture and can’t wait to see what you have planned for the doors.

    God bless.

  2. I love your muted, earthy tones for your home and I am getting a kick out of the bolder colors you are choosing for your cabin.

    1. Yep, very different color schemes 🙂 I’ve always loved both, so it’s fun to get to play with both. Wait til you see my kitchen. It’s my one departure from earth tones in the house 🙂

      1. I can hardly wait to see your kitchen! Even if it’s still a work in progress, I’d love to peek at it!

Also, if you could (at some point) post a floor plan of your home…I’m loving the tours you’re giving but I’m having a hard time picturing the whole layout in my head.

I’ve been thrifty along the way in my life, but you take things to a whole new, awesome level…loving your blog!

        1. Hey, Karen. I plan to share the kitchen soon (maybe in October after I finish getting ready for craft shows). It’s very much not finished (no cabinets and only a sub-floor), but I plan to share it as is and again later when it’s done. I know most websites like to wow you with the finished product, but I figure our unfinished-because-we’re-waiting-until-we-can-afford-to-do-what-we-want-kitchen is much more in keeping with our frugal lifestyle 🙂 And I don’t mind sharing the not-so-perfect stuff with you guys.

Sharing the floor plan is something I’ve been debating. I’m trying to get tours done for the remaining rooms in the house, so I can do something along those lines. Aside from the kitchen, I still have my oldest daughter’s room and the gift closet left. I plan to do the chicken coop, too. And I’d like to put together a post with all of our paint colors — here and at the cabin. Oh, and I have one more space to reveal that I haven’t talked about yet. I’ve been keeping a bit of a secret 🙂

          1. Ok, now I really want to see the kitchen! I tend to go neutral in my home as well, but my kitchen has more color than the other rooms. I went with a soft yellow for the walls as that room is visible from the front room and I didn’t want it too shockingly different. I have more color in the artwork (in the form of inexpensive prints of fruit crate labels and tin cans found at thrift stores, etc.) than other places in the house.

I liked your ‘greige’ color idea for your daughter’s room as I have the same issue with bedspreads. My grandmother quilts and I have a few different ones from her – all of which have color and personality.

  3. Your home and cabin posts are so inspirational. My hubby and I are starting to work on fixing up/decorating our house, and I regularly show him some awesome thing you did.

    Thanks for the posts!

  4. Looking good! I hope you all have been able to spend a lot of time at the cabin this summer. Its so wonderful to be able to get away and be outside more.
